HNF TRIAD Academic Partner Connecticut Children’s has published results from a CMT pediatric natural history study examining ankle function and gait (walking pattern and movement) in children with CMT.

The HNF-funded research set out to determine how age and CMT type affect ankle strength in children. A detailed understanding of how neuropathy progresses in pediatric patients is needed to guide treatments that can improve or prevent a decline in gait function.

Researchers used gait analysis and range-of-motion strength testing to evaluate children with both CMT1 and CMT2. Key findings included:

  • Children with CMT1 had slightly greater ankle strength that continued to increase with age, plateauing at around 13 years.
  • Children with CMT2 were weaker overall and plateaued earlier, but did not appear to get weaker with age.

These differences highlight the importance of understanding gait at the individual patient level using comprehensive analysis, including valid and reliable strength measures.

HNF continues to fund critical pediatric natural history studies for CMT in preparation for clinical trials and to improve treatment outcomes.
