See if your employer will match your gift
Thousands of companies match the charitable gifts their employees make, often dollar for dollar. Search for your employer below to find out whether your gift to HNF can be doubled, along with the forms and instructions to make it happen.
Choose the way that fits you
There is no wrong way to give. Some people send a quick gift today, others plan ahead with stock or a bequest, and many turn an event or a birthday into a fundraiser. Pick what feels right for you.
Where your gift goes
HNF is a lean foundation, which means your gift travels a short distance to the work. It funds the research that moves Charcot-Marie-Tooth toward treatments, the GRIN patient registry that powers clinical trials, and the programs that help families navigate a CMT diagnosis.
Concretely, that means keeping the registry open and growing so researchers can find the patients a trial needs, banking the cell and tissue samples that let scientists study every subtype, and supporting the lab models that prove a therapy is worth testing in people. It also means the everyday support families count on: help understanding a diagnosis, connecting to specialists, and finding their footing after the word CMT first enters their lives.
Because the foundation was started by someone living with CMT, none of this is abstract. Every dollar is spent the way a patient would want it spent, on the pieces of the pathway that get a treatment to the clinic sooner rather than later.
When you give, you are not writing off a cause. You are investing in the people working to make a future where CMT can be treated, and in every family waiting for that day.

Tax-smart giving
Gifts of stock & IRA rollovers
If you have appreciated investments or a required minimum distribution to take, these gifts can do more for the cure and more for your taxes than a cash gift. Always check with your own advisor, and then HNF can help with the details.
Gifts of stock & securities
Donating appreciated stocks or bonds is one of the most tax-effective ways to give.
- Avoid paying capital gains tax on the sale of appreciated stock
- Receive a charitable income tax deduction
- Put your gift to work on CMT research today
To give stock, provide your brokerage with HNF's transfer details (below) naming HNF as the recipient.
IRA charitable rollover (QCD)
If you are 70 and a half or older, you can give directly from your individual retirement account (IRA) through a qualified charitable distribution (QCD).
- Transfer funds directly from your IRA to HNF, up to the federal limit, free of income tax
- Satisfy your required minimum distribution for the year
- Lower your taxable income, even if you do not itemize
Contact your IRA plan administrator to transfer funds directly to HNF. Note that an IRA rollover (QCD) gift does not qualify for a separate charitable deduction.
Donor-advised funds (DAFs)
If you give through a donor-advised fund (DAF), a charitable account you have already funded, you can recommend a grant to HNF in a few clicks.
Ask your DAF sponsor to direct a grant to the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation. The money is already set aside for good. Point some of it at a cure.

Leave a legacy gift
A legacy gift is a way to invest in a future without CMT, even beyond your lifetime. You can name the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation as a beneficiary of your will, trust, life insurance policy, or retirement account. A bequest is one of the easiest and most flexible gifts to make.
Your attorney or advisor can add simple language to your will, trust, or beneficiary designation naming HNF. The sample wording below is a starting point you can share with them.
Gifts Under a Will
The following language is an example of wording that may be used to name HNF as a beneficiary of your last will and testament. Your gift may be of a specific dollar amount or it may also be a percentage of your estate.
General testamentary gift: specific monetary amount
I hereby give and bequeath _______________________ Dollars ($__________________) to The Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation, located at 1641 3rd Avenue #28K, New York, NY 10128, or its successors-in-interest, to be used for general purposes.
General testamentary gift: percentage of residue of estate
I hereby give and bequeath ________ percent (_____%) of the rest and residue of my estate to The Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation, located at 1641 3rd Avenue #28K, New York, NY 10128, or its successors-in-interest, to be used for general purposes.
Gifts from a Trust
The following language is an example of wording that may be used in the event The Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation is named as a contingent beneficiary of a trust estate. Please keep in mind that such gifts may be of either a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the trust estate.
[Insert contingency (e.g., Upon the death of my spouse)], the Trustee shall distribute ________________ Dollars ($__________________) to The Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation, located at 1641 3rd Avenue #28K, New York, NY 10128, or its successors-in-interest, free and clear of trust, to be used for general purposes.
Contractual Gifts
The Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation may be named as the beneficiary of an asset that passes outside the terms of a will or a trust (e.g., life insurance, IRA, 401(k)). In order to clarify the intention of the donor, the contractual instrument governing the asset should set forth the following as the official recipient of the gift:
Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation, located at 1641 3rd Avenue #28K, New York, NY 10128, or its successors-in-interest.
This sample language is provided for informational purposes and is not legal or tax advice. Please consult your own attorney or financial advisor before finalizing any gift.
Your gift is not charity. It is acceleration. Every dollar shortens the distance between a family living with CMT today and the treatments they are waiting for.
Ready to give?
However you choose to help, thank you. You are part of a community that refuses to wait. If you have questions about any kind of gift, the HNF team is glad to walk you through it.
